It is a powder crystalline powder with a yellow-orange orthorhombic crystal structure. As the powder is heated, it changes color from lighter to darker. It has a specific gravity of 7.16 grams per cm3, a melting point of 1473degC, whereas the boiling point is 1750degC. The temperature at which it melts is 850degC. It becomes subliminal and green. It is stable in air and insoluble with water and other inorganic acids, except hydrofluoric, and can slowly dissolve in ammonia solution and concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.

Alkalis is used to make WO from tungsten ore. Further reactions with carbon and hydrogen gases reduce tungsten to pure metal.
Tungsten(VII) oxide can be found in nature as hydrates. This includes minerals like tungstite, meymacite and hydrotungstite. These secondary tungsten mineral minerals can only be found as rare or very scarce.

Tungsten trioxide is prepared in many different ways. The CaWO4 (or Scheelite) can react with HCl in order to make tungstic acid. It then decomposes at high temperatures to WO3 or water.
