There are two types of structures. Two structures, the Cubic (CI80 and IA3) (No.206), are very similar to heavy trivalent lanthanide sequioxides as well. Two types of gadolinium site are found in cubic structures. They each have a coordination number 6, but they all have different coordination geometries. The monoclinic form (Pearson symbol M30, space group B2/ M, number 12) is the second. Cubic structures are more stable when stored at room temperatures. At 1200degC the phase becomes monoclinic. It is primarily a hexagonal phase above the 2100 to 2420 point melting point.

Can be produced by heating the hydroxide, carbonate, nitrate or carbonate. The surface of metal gadolinium forms gadolinium dioxide.
Gadolinium oxide, a high-basic oxide that reacts to carbon dioxide to create carbonate, is also known as gadolinium oxide. It dissolves easily in many inorganic acids. The downside is that fluoride (oxalic acid), fluoride (sulfate) and phosphate (phosphate) are extremely insoluble in liquid water. This may make it difficult to disintegrate completely.

These particles could be used as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. A dexoside coated gadolinium dioxide particle of size 20-40 nm was prepared at 7.05T. This is an abnormally high field compared the 0.5-3T clinically used MRI scanners. Smaller particles, with relaxations of 4.8 s-1 mm -1 each gadolinium ion were also tested for use as MRI reagents.
