The synthesis of Ti3AlC2

The raw material powders titanium powder, aluminum, graphite and a small amount of tin were mixed by liquid phase magnetic stirring, and the ternary Ti3AlC2 ceramics were synthesized by pressureless sintering at 1300 to 1400 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of the ground powder samples show that Ti3AlC2 phase can be obtained by sintering at 1300 and 1350 °C for 30 min, and Ti2AlC phase is present.
Powder of TiC phase. The sample with the raw material powder of 3Ti:1.0A:1.8C:0.2Sn was sintered at 1400 °C for 30 min, and the Ti3AlC2 powder with higher purity was obtained. The scanning electron micrograph showed that the synthesized Ti3AlC2 was a layered structure with a thickness of about At 50 to 100 nm. The mechanism of the synthesis reaction was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry curve and XRD pattern. It indicated that the original powder was first reacted in the aluminum bath to form titanium-aluminum intermetallic compound. With the increase of temperature, TiC and titanium-aluminum metal were formed. The intermetallic compound continues to react with graphite and TiC to finally synthesize Ti3AlC2.
