What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
Sometimes, alloys are added to steel to increase the desired properties. Marine-grade stainless steel, often referred to as Type 316, is resistant to environment that are corrosive.
There are many types that stainless steel 316 comes in. Most commonly used are L F, H, and H variants. They are all slightly different and serves an entirely different purpose. L is a reference to 316L steel having less carbon than the 316.
The 316 and the 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both exhibit better corrosion resistance and are more durable at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened with heat treatment and can be easily bent and stretched.
The difference between 316 and Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel contains less carbon than 316. Even with its higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 nearly in every way. The price is comparable, they are both tough and resistant to corrosion. This makes them ideal for conditions that require a lot of stress.
For projects that require lots of welding, 316L is the more suitable choice since 316 is more prone to welding corrosion over the 316L (corrosion to the weld). However, 316L can be annealed so that it can resist the attenuation of welding. Also, 316L is a suitable stainless for high temperatures, high corrosion applications this is why it's so popular in marine and construction projects.
The 316L and 304L are not the same. 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is similar to the 304L however, the cost is much lower. They aren't as strong as the 317 or 317L that have higher molybdenum levels and superior overall corrosion resistance.
